TRANSPORT OPERATORS, GPRTU THREATEN 20% INCREASE IN FARE IF GOV’T FAILS TO REMOVE TAXES&LEVIES ON FUEL &PETROLEUM

TRANSPORT OPERATORS, G.P.R.T.U. URGE GOVERNMENT TO REMOVE OR REDUCE TAXES AND LEVIES ON FUEL AND PETROLEUM PRODUCTS OR RISK 20% INCREASE IN TRANSPORT FARRES.

The Private Road Transport Commercial Operators Unions together with the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) have expressed their genuine disappointment in government for not putting in place any mitigating or stabilization measures to curtail the hikes in fuel and petroleum products in Ghana.

This according to the aforementioned unions was half-hearted attitude on the part of government to not promote the welfare and income of persons in the commercial transport business.

They said commercial transport operators are the major consumers of petroleum and for that matter contributes mostly to the clearance of legacy debts in the energy sector through the Energy Sector Levy Act 2015 (Act 899) to Energy Sector Levy Act 2021 (Act 1064).

However, the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC) have divergent view on the whole issue.

According to the Head of Research at COPEC, Mr. Benjamin Nsiah, Transport Operators at some point are onthe right path demanding for their right.

But on the other side, Mr. Nsiah revealed that Government is also protecting the populace therefore calls for mutual agreement between the two bodies to address the issue amicably without provocation.
